Consultation

Biking

Your initial appointment will consist of a consultation explaining your diagnosis and treatment options. Occasionally, surgery can be performed the same day as the consultation. However, it is usually helpful to review your dental and medical history, discuss your treatment plan, and review any anesthesia decisions pre-operatively. This will often require a second appointment to provide treatment.

Please assist us by providing the following information at the time of your consultation:

  • Your surgical referral slip and any X-rays, if applicable
  • A list of medications you are presently taking
  • If you have medical or dental insurance, bring the cards and documents. This will save time and allow us to help you process any claims.

IMPORTANT: All patients under the age of 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at the consultation visit.

Please alert the office if you have a medical condition that may be of concern prior to surgery (i.e. diabetes, high blood pressure, heart murmur, artificial heart valves and joints, rheumatic fever, etc.) or if you are currently taking any medication (i.e. heart medications, aspirin, anticoagulant therapy, etc.)

Office Anesthesia Options

Local anesthesia – Numbing injections are given in the appropriate area(s). It is not necessary to change your eating habits before your appointment. Please take any prescription medications as you normally would. If you are pregnant, then local anesthesia is recommended.

Nitrous oxide and local anesthesia – Nitrous oxide gas (“laughing gas”) is administered to produce a relaxed, awake state. Numbing injections are then given. It is not necessary to change your eating habits before your appointment unless you are instructed otherwise.

Intravenous anesthesia – Intravenous (IV) medications are given to produce a semiconscious or unconscious condition. The numbing injections and surgery are accomplished while you are sedated. Following the surgery, you should plan to rest at home for the remainder of the day. Please note the following if you prefer IV anesthesia:

  • Have nothing to eat or drink for at least six hours before the appointment. You may take prescription mediations with a small amount of water.
  • Have a responsible adult with you to drive you home. This is a must! Your escort must be present in the office before and during your procedure, and should plan to stay with you the remainder of that day.
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing with short sleeves. Please remove all jewelry and nail polish before your appointment. If you wear contact lenses, please remove them and wear your eyeglasses instead.

X-Rays

If your dentist or physician has taken x-rays, you may request that they forward them to our office. If there is not enough time, please pick them up and bring them to our office. If additional films are necessary, they can be taken at our facility.
